Associate Professor of Animal Parasitology, UFRRJ and CNPq Research fellowship 1-B. I have a major in Biological Sciences at Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima, Peru and I completed my doctoral studies on fish parasitology at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro in 1994. Also, I completed one year of postdoctoral research at University of Otago, New Zealand, working with Dr. Robert Poulin. Since arriving here from Peru in 1991, I am carrying out research on several aspects of the biodiversity of fish parasites, focusing taxonomic and ecological issues. Currently, our research has four branches, reflecting my main long-term interests: 1. Intensification of taxonomic studies of parasites of fishes from several regions of Brazil, 2. Detection of possible patterns in the composition and structure of the parasite communities in Brazilian fishes, and, eventually, in other vertebrate groups, 3. To study taxonomic and ecological aspects of fish-borne parasitic zoonoses and from the parasite species limiting pisciculture activities and 4. Organization of database with all parasite groups of fish parasites from Brazil, including also other vertebrate hosts. |
